2019-2020: What were the backgrounds of Benton County students?

Of the 1,019 students enrolled in Benton County schools in 2019-2020, 46.8% were Black or African American, according to the Mississippi Department of Education. This was the most represented ethnicity among Benton County students.

This is a 0.1% increase over the previous school year.

Ashland Elementary School had the highest enrollment of Black or African American students in the 2019-2020 school year.

A snapshot of Benton County schools showed 46.8% students were Black or African American, 46.3% were White, 1.5% were Hispanic or Latino and 1.4% were Two or More Races.

There are three schools in Benton County.

Mississippi has continually struggled with public education. The most recent Report Card on American Education, from a right-leaning think tank, gave the state a C-. This is consistent with ratings stretching back nearly one decade.

The nonpartisan Education Week also ranked Mississippi schools as C- in their most recent analysis.
